A 2024 NIH-funded study in JAMA Network Open followed 156 post-9/11 veterans over three months. Veterans paired with a trained service dog had 66% lower odds of a clinical PTSD diagnosis. 31% no longer met the diagnostic criteria at all.

A 2022 meta-analysis across 41 studies confirmed a large, clinically meaningful effect on PTSD severity. Treatment dropout for traditional therapy runs at 27%. For service dog programs: 10%.

Multiple veterans stated their dog may have prevented them from dying by suicide.
