VMF Training Team · Veterans Moving ForwardSmall's First Metro Ride
This month Small completed a major training milestone — her first metro rail and escalator training session with her Army veteran. She has to metro to work with him, so this is a real-world skill that directly impacts their daily life together.
The photo on the escalator is from her first ride. The photo on the metro floor is her resting calmly between the seats — exactly what a trained service dog needs to do in a public transit environment.
"Small training with her Army veteran. She has to metro to work with him. The pic with chrome handle is on her 1st metro ride."
VMF Training Team · Veterans Moving ForwardTraining Around Cats — Distraction Proofing
A service dog for a veteran with PTSD needs to stay focused no matter what is happening around them. This month, VMF dogs completed socialization training around cats — learning to stay calm and ignore distractions in a home environment.
This kind of training matters because veterans live real lives with real households. A dog that breaks focus at the wrong moment is a dog that can't do its job.
Meet CJ — Paired With His Veteran
This month VMF shared photos of CJ from their fundraiser. CJ is a black Labrador Retriever who has been paired with his veteran for two months. They were there together at the fundraiser — a real example of what this mission produces.
CJ
Black Labrador Retriever. Paired with his U.S. veteran two months ago. They attended the VMF fundraiser together — CJ stayed by his veteran's side the entire time.
"The dog is CJ, he was there with his Veteran. They have been together for two months." — VMF Team
Grocery Store Training — The Real World
Service dogs need to work everywhere their veteran goes — including crowded grocery stores. VMF dogs train in real public environments so there are no surprises when they are paired with a veteran.
Mary Is Being Placed Right Now
VMF shared that Mary — a dog currently in their program — is being placed with her veteran as of this writing. Next month we will have photos and updates on Mary and her veteran.
"Mary is getting placed as I type. I will send some more pictures and info on her."
